HISTORY
In 1983, when the University of Quindío envisioned opening academic programs of the mode of open and distance education, librarian Martha Elena Medina Parra, Director of the Library of the University, presented the Academic Vice President, Dr. Luis Eduardo Alvarez, the idea of considering the program Library as one of the potential to be made and offered in this type of education. 
The program is proposed with the name of '' 'Information Science and Documentation, "considering that this name more widely defined graduate profile professional future, which, in addition to training for the administration of libraries and information centers documentation, in the traditional way, you will receive a technical and methodological training for operations related to the use of modern technologies of the computer for automatic information retrieval, management of resources, services and information systems activities and administration and organization of files. 
Thus Martha Elena Medina Parra led and presented the project in collaboration with Bibliotecologists and officials thereof Information Unit, Luz Marina Patiño and Lucelly Brown Chaverra entitled "Science Information and Documentation: Curriculum design in the category of Education open and Distance "preliminary feasibility study in collaboration with leading officials of the institution, for the creation of the Program Distance having the infrastructure and experience in this mode of the university to be the pioneer in the region in this type of education, which obtained the consent and approval of the Supreme Council of the University through the support needed to obtain the operating license and implementation. 
In 1986 the Supreme Council of the University of Quindío, by Resolution No. 074 of July 3 of that year, approved sole article presenting the project to open Undergraduate Program "Information Science and Documentation "Distance Learning mode, before the Colombian Institute of Higher Education. 
Meanwhile the Colombian Institute for the Promotion of Higher Education ICFES by Agreement No. 091 of 28 May 1987 granted the operating license program Science Information and Documentation on methodology Distance, offered by the University Quindío residing in Armenia, with Registration No. 120840200006300112300 ICFES. 
The University of Quindío, through Resolution 047 of the Higher Council June 18, 1996, renewed until July 31, 1998, approval of the Information Science Program and Documentation. 
For 1997, the Superior Council of the University of Quindío, 0090 Agreement by November 10 of that year, approves the Science Curriculum Redesign Program Information and Documentation. 
For the period between 1986 and 1997, developing its own strategy in the development of the academic program of each semester, which reduced any need for it to be on-campus due to continuous travel of students and mentor teachers from different cities of the country to the city of Armenia (See - University of Quindío) as those from the departments of Antioquia, Atlántico, Bolívar, Boyacá, Caldas, Caquetá, Cauca, Córdoba, Cundinamarca, Nariño, Magdalena, Meta, Norte de Santander, Risaralda, Santander, Tolima and Valle del Cauca. 
Four or five face tutorials per subject is passed to two; taking into account the characteristics of the mode of being distance education; besides excessively elevated investment costs made by students and trauma that caused their respective permits companies to move to the city of Armenia. 
By Agreement No. 0003 February 18, 1999, by which a faculty is created reorganize and other forms of classroom education, blended and distance, the program Science Information and Documentation are articulated, was assigned to Faculty of Human Sciences Fine Arts. 
The University of Quindío by Agreement No.003 Superior Council of 8 February 2001, renewed the approval of some academic programs, among which are Information Science and Documentation. 
Besides the University of Quindío, by agreement No.007 Superior Council of 12 May 2004, approved the redesign of the curriculum of the Academic Program Undergraduate Science Information and Documentation, Library and Archives. 
Similarly, the Ministry of Education through Resolution 2353 of May 10, 2007 gives the program Science Information and Documentation, Library and Archives, for the term of seven years Qualified SNIES Register: 120840200006300112300, virtual modality, since 2005 had implemented hundred percent, using the Moodle platform. 
The Ministry of National Education by Resolution No. 8523 of September 27, 2010, recognizes the virtual program methodology. 
The Council of the Faculty of Humanities and Fine Arts, by act No. 23 of October 27, 2011, endorsed the curriculum reform program and the Academic Council meeting held on September 11, 2013, was approved and follow their pending with the Ministry of Education. 
When you start to 2014 continues with the review process and completion of the Master Document SACES request for "academic couple" to secure renewal Qualified Registry for seven years.
 
MISSION
The Information, Documentation, Librarian and Archiving Sciences Major is an academic program composed of administrative, professorate, students, and graduates with personal values who, through virtual teaching and learning processes, train professionals in managing information.
 
VISION
In the year 2020, this major will be recognized as a model for virtual learning stemming from asynchronic didactic dialogues which will, in a proposal-like manner, contribute to the development of the region and the country through information management.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
Professionals who have undergone studies in the Information, Documentation, Librarian and Archiving Sciences at the University of Quindío will be able to:
Analyze, process and provide both analogue and digital information.
Manage information units.
Apply standing legal norms to professional performance as either a librarian or an archivist.
Implement analogue, electronic, digital and virtual technologies that allow for the optimization of access, storage, recovery, usage and distribution of information.
Contribute to the democratization of information and documentation access.
Conduct research on the organization, management, processing, diffusion, access, storage, recovery, usage and distribution of information.
Promoting reading in each one of the information units.
Guide users through the usage of information unit resources.
