History

Originally, the focus of the major was land meassuring for titling purposes, specifically regarding the agrarian reform and the tracing of rural causeways that made the transportation of agrarian products to nearby populations easier. With the rise in construction and the accelerated development of the coffee growing industry in the coffee region, the Technology in Topography Major broadened its focus towards topography applied to construction  and rural and urban sewage.

1962: Authorization to begin operations is granted to the Faculty of Educational Sciences and the Topography School at the University of Quindío by the Colombian University Asociation, National University Fund, as per Agreement No. 14, May 3rd.

Dispositions to admit aspiring students into the Faculty of Land Surveying, Educational Sciences and Topography were dictated through Agreement No. 34, November 27, 1962.

The topography major was created with the purpose of adressing a need for land surveying and causeway tracing professionals within the agrarian reform framework. To this end, the Academic Council of the Nacional University grants authorization to create a contract to provide the University of Quindío with professional advice related to the academic organization of the Faculty of Land Surveying and Topography through Resolution No. 99, 1962. Once curricula, academic orientation, resources and Director and professorate tenuring were established, the faculty received its approval.

The first curricular design was made by Professor Eduardo Villate B. from the Nacional University. The first promotion were conferred the title of Geodesist Topographer.

1964: Through Agreement No. 2624, August 14th, issued by the National Ministry of Education, the curriculum for the School of Topography at the University of Quindío was approved. The main professorate back then consisted of Leopoldo Fratary, Ramón D'Luis Nieto, Ernesto Ruiz Alvarino and Gilberto Gómez Gómez, the latter of whom was the first professor to have graduated from the same major.

1969: The Topography major started its first community extension works by designing a set of planimetric maps for the San Fernando neighborhood (where the SENA institute is located today), which were used to expand and pave streets 12th and 17th.   

1970: The program is transfered to the Basic Sciences Faculty.

1977: The Faculty of Engineering and its Civil Engineering and Topography majors are created in January.

1978: The second curricular designed is presented and the conferred title of the major is changed to "Topographer".

1979: The first educational research works were set in motion through a project named "Evaluation of Five Different Horizontal Lifting Methods" (procedural evaluation).

Because of the developmental increase of the national and regional road infrastructure, academic contents such as earthworks and higher-range causeways were introduced. The major's conferred title changed from "Topographer" to "Topography Technologist".

1983: The major begins offering graduate courses.

1984: The major signs a partnership agreement with Empresas Públicas de Armenia to create the Sewage and Aqueduct Master Plant.

1986: Professor Gilberto Gómez conducts two research projects with backing from the Advanced Research and Training Faculty.

1987: The topography major and the Colombian Topographers Society organizes the Third National Topography Contest.

1989: A new curricular design is introduced.

1992: Law 80 goes into full effect. This measure systematized education in Colombia and established the Technologic Specialization course as a research line or second cycle to better round up the professionalization of topographers at the University. In this case, the law was used as a catalyst to design an experimental curriculum that would serve to study and develop a professional training model in the field of engineering or basic sciences.

1997: The Faculty of Engineering Research and Studies Center (CEIFI) was created by topography major professors Jairo Díaz Hurtado and Gonzalo Jiménez, alongside Civil Engineering professors Hugo Monsalve Jaramillo, Armando Espinoza Vaquero and Juan carlos García Leal. 

Between the years 1999 and 2005, some professors strengthen their academic education by completing masters and Ph.D studies abroad and in other prestigious national universities.

2000: The Quindío Geodesic Network is created in partnership with the Department Planning institution and IGAC.

2002: The Topography Major professors join the Civil Engineering Major's Quimbaya Research Group

2004: The current curricular designed is made.

The time period between 2003 and 2004 is spent studying educational tendencies in Engineering and topography training, grounded on an extensive bibliography that ultimately allowed the objectives of the major to be permanently oriented and the curriculum to be firmly established, much in the way of those of the University of Valle and the Distrital University. Said curricula follow the parameters established during international congresses about engineering training.

During the years 2001 and 2009, the program participated in relevant extension programs such as El Camino del Quindío (The Pathway of Quindío), Densification of Salento's Geodesical Network, Armenia's Roadwork Plan, Topographic SIG study of El Cofre creek, seismic vulnerability study, and many others.

2005: The Technology in Topography Major is granted the National Ministry of Education Qualification certificate through Resolution No. 3760, September 21st, 2005, for a 7-year term.

2009: The geomatics engineering project is created and presented before all the legal instances at the University of Quindío and is then approved. In 2009, the Accreditation process is begun by cundicting an exhaustive internal evaluation.

2010: The GEOIDE G-62 research group is created. This group seeks to present research projects to the University and to COLCIENCIAS.

2011: A new curricular design is proposed as part of the accreditation process.

The Technology in Topography Major is an academic organization composed of administrative staff, professorate and other personnel who offer a modern educational training model (personal, scientific and professional technologist) in the field of Technology in Topography to Colombian highschool graduates, so that they may contribute to the construction and upholding of a pacific, just, solidary and intelligent society from their profession.

Vision

The Technology in Topography Major will be recognized internationally as an academic, scientific and technological organization that has a high quality social projection, in which  Colombian highschool graduates will be trained as citizens, scientists and technologists who will facilitate the improvent of the life quality of all communities, especially the underprivileged ones.

Technological Profile

The topography technologist is characterized by their laboral versatility and for being prepared to perform efficiently in both public and private companies. They possess the skills acquired during their training to carry out their duties with ease, and especially with a solid mathematical background. They are also aware of social problematics, which enables them to reason logically, to be proactive, to have a sense of leadership and to have a professional authority inclination that will permit them to make decisions that are favorable to their profession, their company and the social development of the community. The main role of the Topography Technologist is the territorial study that seeks to accurately describe its surface in a graphic and analytical manner, grounded on topographiv and technological IT with an aim to develop infrastructure, territorial management and consultancy projects.

Our graduate will carry out tasks such as land surveying, town planning, tracing, land parcelling, terrestrial control, cartography, mining, peer reviewing, and will also integrate multi-disciplinary groups that carry out works related to georgaphical information systems, geo-referencing, geodesy and environmental impact studies
